I think you're looking at swapping the entire dash and everything to do that. You can get a cluster with gauges to fit yours. I had to for my 94. Just need to swap your oil pressure sending unit and coolant temp sensor then.

I didn't swap to the 97 up cluster. I just got a cluster with gauges from another 91-95.

I was just wondering if the 01 was going to work. If not then the Dash swap will not work. Unless I really wanted to go through that trouble wiring, witch is not likely. http://image2.onlineauction.com/auct...-1183996-1.jpg

I found this, A person installed a other vehicle cluster in their XJ
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/conver...version-3.html

I found 3 members and online people that swaped a complete 01 Dash in the 89-96 Cherokees with new Cluster? How do I go about installing the Cluster on mine?
This is the cluster I have in mine.

Up to '96 (I think) the XJ was OBD1 and in '97 it went to OBD2.

I think to do this you would have to change the engine computer to make a newer dash work.

You can always do what I am thinking of doing and just building a dash out of tubing and aluminum and putting aftermarket gauges in.

I was doing some more research and found a "OBDI conversion harness to OBD2" So all I would need is this harness? Is it just like Say a desktop that uses IDE drive and wanted to install a new SATA drive, you buy the SATA harness cables and plug the adapter into the old IDE to run SATA?

I found some ODB1 to ODB2 adapters online.

Anyone done this with their old vehicle I'm sure this can be done.

I also came up with this idea of leaving my cluster in and removing the lighting system on the side of the cluster, The box that is connected to the cluster that displays the Full Time 4X4, Low Time 4X4, Mait Req, Check Engine, ect. On the 97-Up clusters they have all the indicator lights on the cluster its self, This was my idea, Since im switching to the 97-01 dash the small round box shape between the cluster and middle dash console, I was going to find a way of installing the entire indicator lights in it. Not sure how where im going to find the image frame pics that show the icons. If the cluster I have can have extended wiring, witch was viewing on the 97-01 Cluster I have, I can extend the light wiring to that small box.

Heres a image of the lighting I put in.

Heres a much better image of what I'm wanting to do.
http://img39.imageshack.us/i/lighting.png/

This is my one idea if I can't or very complicated to install the real 97-01 Cluster
The small box shape between the cluster and air vent console, not sure what it really was for.
For installing the true 97-01 Cluster, I've been doing reading on google and typed OBD2 in a OBD1 vehicles and most of the answers came out saying yes they will work and that I would need a cluster wiring harness adapter. and said they must be same motor types "couldn't be a cluster for 3.7L motor to fit in a 4.0L" witch 99% XJs were 4.0L motors, and mine is a 4.0L

Also if I can get it installed, will I have to set my right miles on it or will it automaticly do it?
