Super weird thermostat problem
Hey everyone, just bought my first cherokee and lovin it so far. It's a 91, 4.0, 4x4, and manual tranny
So the heater wasn't working very well and I decided to pop open the thermostat housing only to find that there is no thermostat, just a mess of RTV sealant. No problem I figure, I'll just grab a new thermo and throw it in there.
Now here's where it gets weird, there is no way to install the thermostat without getting a giant leak. There's no recess in the head or the thermostat housing, so basically it's getting sandwhiched between the two and causing a huge leak.
I'm wondering if someone installed a different year head on this motor and it's not matching the thermostat housing?? Anybody ever had a problem like this?

You should see that on your engine...with a little lip around the perimeter to allow the thermostat to "stick in" -- you REALLY don't have anything like that?
