Default stupid battery accident

I removed my battery because I was out of town for about a week and a half.

Took the battery out of the house and on the way out the door caught my sleeve and pulled one arm off the battery.

Top corner of the battery met the pavement, and put a slight horizontal crack in the top portion of the battery.

Lucky me little to no fluid leaked or continues to leak. The battery has continued to work...so far...but I'm starting to get curious about what will happen long term.

Once summer and warm temps roll around will all the water evap out leaving me without a working battery?

Will the left over acid then boil over creating a **** storm under my hood?

I know I can get a re-mann'd battery for real cheap, but money is tight til the wife gets back to work, so I'm not spending money unless absolutely necessary.

If anyone can shed some light on this I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

You seems to already know the answer. Obviously you should replace it. At best, it will just stop working. At worst, because you have already cracked one level of safety, it could become a volcano of acid shooting everywhere or even explode.

It's an explosion hazard due to out-gassing while under any charging condition. It will naturally vent gasses when exposed to varying under hood temperatures too.

See if you can ****** a discard from a Firestone, NTB, Sears (etc.) service shop for cheap or nil. They sell batteries to people that don't really always need them and you can get lucky - just bring it home and charge it. Live with it until you can afford a fresh replacement.

Continuing to use a cracked battery is a bad strategy, for many reasons.

Replace it.

I was in PR for a week and a half getting married. Its cold in WI, and I didn't want any slow drains effect the battery while I was gone, so I just pulled it out and put it in my warm basement.

I'll just spend the overwhelming $25 on a remann'd battery.

I guess I'm just cheap.
