My 93 Cherokee Sport 4x4 Stock XJ has a "knock" when turning the steering wheel. The noise existed even before I replaced the steering shaft. There appears to be no feeling invloved with the noise, just a loud knock, 2-5 going in each direction.

No ... it is tight. It sounds like a slap on the frame. I know it itsn't loose, I was searching this awhile back and someone said it could be the tie rod?

Check to see if your track bar bracket to frame rail bolts are tight. Don't just gander at them. Put a wrench/socket/impact on them and tighten them down.
