Kinda hard to know if it worked if you don't know what it looked like before

Do it and post up photos. Can't hurt. And we'll be able to tell if it had an effect. Many of us have pulled heads off 4.0s and remember how much carbon buildup to expect.

Do you know the proper way to do this?

I don't know about "spotless like a brand new motor" after only one treatment.

I only do it when Ihave a problematic vehicle such as sprak knock, or a piece of carbon rattling around in the chanmber. I have done it many times though, rev it to about 2500 then goose throttle open and dump in about 1/2 qt of water and keep feathering throttle until she straightens out..

? try Seafoam into the intake.

I have been using Meth/washer fluid injection on the SC jeep for 10,000+ miles and when I pulled the head to replace head gasket, the intake ports and combustion chamber and tops of pistons did look like nearly new, no carbon at all.

The idea of the water is that it's NOT a petro-chemical and steams the carbon off.

On the 2 99s I dealt with, different chemical cleaners were tried but the only thing that got the carbon out from under the valve was the water.

Just messing with ya ..my dad was a firm believer in water thru the intake did it for years. We never had to tear any of his motors down the vechicles fell apart around them...

I always heard the way to do it was rev the engine up a little and use a spray bottle, fog in the water to the point of almost killing the engine and keep doing it for a few minutes.

As far as how it works, I studied similar reactions when I had my course in Coal Chemistry, carbon actually burns when reacting with steam. Many coal fired power plants inject steam to make them burn hotter.

They use steam to blast the slag off the walls of the units...
