Default sputtering, stalling, knocking xj.

So it all started when I had a cracked exhaust system, I threw a few tacks on it and it started to backfire and sputter. Thinking I had to much back pressure I redid my exhaust by putting old one back on (which it ran fine with) and it was still doing it. So what's happening is ill be driving I'll feel a flat spot about 1/4 throttle to 3/4 throttle it'll sputter, knock, and then stall. But if I go to wide open throttle it takes of like nothings wrong any ideas as to what the problem could be?

Start with verifying fuel pressure. Must be done with a fuel pressure gauge. You need approximately 31 psi for your 88 to run properly. Then disconnect the vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator and the pressure should jump to approximately 39 psi.You can rent a fuel pressure gauge from many parts stores; call around for availability. Report back you results.

Also review standard tuneup hardware. Plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. The importance of solid tuneup hardware cannot be overstated.
