I just picked up this 95 Cherokee and it didn't come with a spare. I am unsure where the spare should go. In the back cargo area I have a mount to stick the tire there, but the back looks like at one time had a rear swing mount. Is this something that the previous our might have added? I would prefer to have the spare on the back to free the cargo area. I am planning on towing with it so I don't want a hitch mounted spare holder either. Is there some place I can find parts for this or would my best bet be the local junkyard?

 

Originally the Tire was bolted to the wall on the drivers side of the rear cargo area. Thats probably the best place to put it as the carriers are very rare to find at a JY and the aftermarket ones run $650 and up. You could always put it on the roof if you really want to.

 

Do you think the rear carrier was something that was added? From the factory it would either come with one or the other correct?

 

cherokee's didnt come from the factory with a tire carrier on the back. you have to by a rear tire carrier or make one. the only place that you can put them from the factory is in the rear cargo. or buy a roof rack witha spare tire carrier.

 

Really...I read somewhere that they made two versions of swing away carries, but not a lot were made.

 

oh wait, yeah they did make them. only for a few years i think. check local junk yards.

i have that same tire carrier on my xj that i just took off. its made by
Chrysler as a factory option. im not using it anymore if you want to buy it.

My 93 xj country 2 door had one. I kinda regret throwing it away.

 

looks like one used to be on thier and the replaced the bumper when they took it off and probly gave it to someone for thier bumper

 

I will have to look under my bump to make sure I can mount one still. I am unsure why the previous owner would have got rid of it. Prob was stolen or something. I do like the looks of the aftermarkets, but I couldn't spend that much when I work at a fabrication shop. Anyone have any plans for a rear bumper/carrier? I would be willing to make a few more while I'm at it.

For me... it's just easier this way.
