Some Minor Snags
This month I bought my first vehicle which happened to be a 1995 4 door Cherokee sport and I do love it. The thing is pretty much completely stock and I hope to change that drastically over the next few years. I got the thing for a great deal, but of course it has it's problems...
But anyway what brings me here is I have spent lots of time growing up around farms where everything is always a "fix it yourself" type of attitude and I would like to keep the self reliant thing going. However my mechanical skills are limited to high school auto class and I am drastically gonna need some help here since I am noticing I have some large gaps in knowledge so if you don't have the patience I understand.
I don't expect anyone to make my problems disappear, but here's what I'm haing troubles with... :
Most importantly, I don't have second gear which at first didn't phase me at all, but now is starting to get to me specially when trying to turn onto a busy road. I don't even know where to start with this at all
After that it seems a little less horrific, sometimes my Jeep won't start unless I put it into neutral, which after doing some research I have figured out is my NSS, But I get mixed suggestions on what to do about it. Some say rip it off you don't need it, others say take it apart and clean it. Finally a buddy of mine hopped in the other day and while we were reversing out of the icy driveway I threw it into 4WD and he claimed that he could feel I had a broken U-Joint. (probably me being stupid out in the trails)
Man, I'm starting off my first post here with an essay and I'm not trying to be a whining *****. Hopefully the community here is a good bunch and I'd like this to be the first post of many to come (I'd rather the other one's aren't me needing help with busted ****, but we'll see)
Thanks guys

I'd start by cleaning or replacing the NSS. You might find that cures some or all of your transmission problems. While under there try wiggeling the driveshafts and see if you can notice 'play' in any of the joints. u-joints are fairly easy to replace and if you plan on doing a fair amount of off roading I would go the route of just replacing them all (there are 7 total). Not cheap when you're talking about doing them all, but it will add some peace of mind when out on the trail.

Alright, maybe if the weather clears up today that's what I'll do! If just cleaning the NSS remedies my tranny problems then that would be amazing! As for the u joints I'll have to wait a bit to have the cash to replace them all. Thanks guys!

Haha, so far I love it however the gas was a bit of a shock at first... But worth it!
Just out of curiosity any other suggestions about the lack of second gear in case things don't go so simply and cleaning my NSS doesn't magic all my problems haha!

I may have missed this already, but is your Jeep a manual or auto?

First of all. Welcome to the forum.
I do agree, Clean you NSS is where I would start. But, it is very unlikely that it will cure the problem with not having a second gear. To me it sound like it is a problem with the trans it self.

Haha alright so the NSS didn't fix the second gear problem like most of you suggested... So this still brings the question of is there any idea on what could, should I just suck it up? Or should I start looking into swapping it out?
