Default Smells like gas in my Jeep!!

So I have a theory. I recently bought this 92 XJ and the previous owner had mounted the compressor and air tank behind the seat. I removed them and moved them to the side of the back. Check out my albums to see the back it came out great. Anyway I removed a few screws from the floor where he had mounted a piece of wood. I went wheelin yesterday and smelled the gas when we stopped for lunch. I was wondering if the gas tank is close enough that if he screwed through the floor he could have screwed through the gas tank. When I removed the screw it opened the hole? Doesn't the gas tank run under pressure? I am open to suggestions. Thanks

Default Hmm?

Two things. take a coat hangar or something long enough to stick through the holes to feel around for a hole in the tank. That would be one heck of a long screw! Pop the hood and make sure no gas is coming from an injector O ring etc. Good Luck.

Default It doesn't smell under the hood just in the back.

I'm gonna try the coat hanger idea.

Default How long were the screws you removed?

I just dont see anyone being dumb enough to run that long of a screw in there. I hope you bolted yours. Definately check under the hood. One injector O ring can ruin your day. Gas and hot engine dont mix, and you will smell it.

Oh yeah? What about the guy that wants to use his xj front axle to fix his truck? Or the E3 sparkplugs? Or ME when I thought my loose torque converter was piston slap. There, but for the grace of God, go I.

THe screws were about 2.5 inches and self tapping. Is the gas tank even that close to the floor. I cant even get to it because mt gas tank is skidplated. If it doesnt smell under the hood where else should I check?

Default I found the leak!!

THe PO was a retard and definately screwed through the floor and into the gas tank. I pulled up my tool box and the rhino liner was wet with gas. under, the carpet wet with gas. What will this do to the operation of the jeep? I probably have to drop the gas tank to plug it or put the screw back in!!!!!!!!!!!! Help

Default PO was dumb.

Run the screw back in. Get the gas out. purge it with compressed air. weld that hole.

Purge with air and hit that with a welder and you'll get to meet your ancestors. Of course, if you're Muslim and you do it right, you get 72 virgins.

My advice is throw the tank away, buy a new one. They are cheap. Cheaper than funerals.

Even running the screw back in could launch you into the stratosphere. Siphon the tank down as far as possible, drop it out of there, empty the rest of the gas and fill it with water. Leave it that way and haul it to the landfill.

As far as I know there is just about no safe way to clean a gas tank so you can weld. The gas tank repair guys SOLDER them...but they are experts at this. Come to think of it...this could make a good Funniest Home Videos. Might win the $10,000 prize.

Default You obviously dont know s%!? about welding.

Are you confined space certified? Didnt think so. Gas out purge the fumes and you are fine. Be patient and make sure you dont smell any fumes. Yes water will help too, After purging with air. The nose knows. And yes Ive welded tanks before to include Tanker trucks. I never made Americas Funniest Home Videos.

Yeah, buy a new one. You could probilly use a new tank due to rust anyway.
