I was looking to mount my fan to the water pump. I have a 98 xj classic with 240,500 miles on it. My fan clutch is not working very good right now. So I got one for a 98 TJ, which is about the same as the one for the ZJ. Right now my electric fan does not come on with the ac or when the temp reaches 220 degrees. I have not over heated the jeep and it only gets that hot when I'm in traffic with the air on. So I was looking to mount the fan with the new clutch to the water pump and make a new shroud to cover the rad and eliminate the electric fan all together. Has anyone seen this or done this before.

Cooling system on these vehicles are minimal. You need get that aux fan working properly and get a shroud. I don't know if the fan clutch you have will clear the radiator or not. The fan w/clutch already mounts to the water pump.

Just do what I did. Wire a toggle switch in your cab that goes directly from battery power to the aux fan. No need to worry about whether it is turning on or off because you have control of it. Just be sure to turn it off when you turn the Jeep off or the battery will drain (obviously but with some people you never know.) I also put in a 20 amp in line to protect the fan motor. 5 minute job tops.

I'm probably missing something, but why wouldn't you just replace the fan clutch and the e-fan or whatever is causing it to not come on?

Yeah. Just replace the fan clutch. Personally I prefer mechanical fan AND electric fan wired to an auxiliary switch, for the extra cooling when I need it.

Not to doubt your ingenuity, but how do you wire a mechanical fan to an aux switch?

Thanks for the info guys, but the aux fan is shot the motor is no good on it and I don't have the funds to get a new one or do a trial and error run to the jy to find a good one. The fan clutch from the Tj is only .125 inches longer than the one form the xj, so there is no fitment problems there. Right now the fan mounts off center of the water pump, I am looking to mount it directly to the water pump like on the ZJ's and TJ's, and build a new shroud out of the one for the mechanical fan that is on there now. I figured it would work because the ZJ's don't have an electric fan that comes on with the AC they just have the single fan in the center of the rad mounted to the water pump.

Are you positive the aux fan motor is bad? Have you jumpered the wires straight to battery to test it? I couldn't get mine to work any other way than wiring it straight to the battery. Finding a good one at the JY wouldnt be hard. Just bring a battery with you and a couple of wires, unplug the connector at the aux fan, use the wires to hook it up to the battery and if it turns its good. That would be a lot easier than fabricating some mechanical fan to connect to the water pump and its free to test so why not?

I wouldn't do a TJ fan set up because of the shape of the radiator. TJ has more of a squarish radiator, perfect for a center mounted fan clutch.

XJ radiators are a long rectangle, better to have two fans for it

The mechanical fan isn't currently mounted to the water pump so I guess you could say it's off-center.

What is the advantage to mounting the fan directly to the pump as opposed to where it is now?

Only you know how much time you have to devote to such a project. You are going to make a bunch more trips to the JY for this project than you would to track down an e-fan plus who knows how many hours.

I say go for it. It will take your mind off of the fact that you don't have a hot Jeep to drive around.
