I do understand exactly what you are saying. You want to eliminate everything and install just one mechanical fan. It may work I really don't know. But like you were saying you will need to fab a shroud to cover the entire rad for proper cooling. If you do try this post some pics with the results to let us know if there are any benefits with low temps. Just make sure that you do have enough clearance between the rad and the fan clutch.
