Default Shifting

I have a 98 Jeep Cherokee stock, the other day I was on the highway and the Jeep wouldn’t shift out of third (other than 2nd and 1st.) It has happened a few more times since then. I am curious if it has anything to do with the speed sensors or something like that. And what other jeeps I could try to pull one from from the pull apart. Thanks

Do this first:

Over near the transmission dipstick tube are 2 rather large connectors. One is black and goes to the NSS and the gray connector goes to the transmission itselfTCU fuse TCU location

. These 2 connectors carry all the info between TPS, TCU, NSS, speed sensor, and transmission solenoids.

Unplug each one, visually inspect for corrosion or bent pins, spray them out with electrical contact cleaner and plug them back in.

You might want to check your shift solenoid, if your harnesses check out good. There are three of the inside the transmission. You will have to drop the transmission pan to inspect them

Also this. For instructions on how to check the solenoids, check out this thread. https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/doe...rans-problem-d

I ended up replacing my solenoids, and it's worked great ever since. Same year keep and same symptoms.

There was no 98 Cherokee V8. Only Grand Cherokee. And it used a different tranny altogether.
