i have brought this up before but still cant find the problem. I have a 96 Cherokee SE. It doesnt matter if im in drive park reverse or neutral it still shakes. it does seem to be worse in reverse and drive. When shifting into drive it wants to jump forward. there is no change in rpm and no check engine light on. it seems to smooth out when i start moving or give it gas. i have changed the motor and transmission mounts
Harmonic balancer
spark plugs
wires, cap and rotor
any ideas???? could it be some kind of sensor going out? misfire? something to do with exhaust system?
Clean all your injectors and check your TPS with a multimeter.
Remove your fuel line that goes from the firewall to the rail and blow out with compressed air, then spray through it best you can with carb cleaner and replace.
Another possibility is timing or crank pos. sensor, have you messed with the distributor at all lately? Are all the connections clean and tight on your ignition stuff?
Make sure all your spark plugs are gapped to .035 and you have dielectric on your plug wire contacts. All your contacts, really, can't hurt.
TL;DR sounds like a fuel issue or a TPS, possible bad coil or something ignition related.

Did you ever find a solution? I am having the same issue with a 97 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x 6cyl. Purchased used with 200k miles. I'm thinking bad gas, but the description sounds exactly the same as my issue so I wanted to see if there was a solution. I cleaned the distributor (was full of powder?). Plugs are good. Gaps good. Jeep has a vacuum leak that won't let me change the ac/heater vent off of floor. Also appears to have a very slow drain on the battery.
You guys are making this way too complicated, and overlooking the obvious:
It's a chihuahua.
Hey I am not sure what to do on this form or how to post but I am looking for some help. I have a 2000 4.0 xj sport and I have 6.5 lift and 35x12.5 Kevlar's I only get 6-8 mpg at best I need to get better. Any tips.
Year: 1998 Classic (I'll get it running soon....) and 02 Grand
Model: Cherokee (XJ)
Engine: 4.0
Welcome!
The only tip you need is on starting a new thread. Main page, look for the "New Thread" button. It's not hiding.
For the fuel economy problem, you don't need "tips". 6-8 MPG means one of two things:
You don't know how to measure fuel economy. (A lot don't.)
You have a serious problem with your engine.
On # 1, if you think miles per tank means something or if your method involves the fuel gauge in any way, you don't have any idea what your mileage really is. Start by learning the correct method. You might not have a problem at all.
If you are okay on #1, then it's #2. If so, do NOT listen to idiots who try to tell you various standard gas saving tips. "Ease up on the throttle!" and all that. Find and fix your problem. Don't worry - it's fixable. Post a new thread and a bunch of folks will jump on and start helping you.
But don't grovel. (see my sig)

Don’t know if it’s still an issue 3 years later but since no one has said anything

i has the same exact problem eventually the car would shut off idling, changed out the spark plugs and the ignition coil and the CAM sensor and the crankshaft sensor to my Jeep and it runs fine now.

Nope I have a 1999 xj 4×4 and it's terrible on gas but I love my jeep jeep. My jeep jeep shakes to a lot and the death wobble is terrible but these are great vehicles
