several problems..
so I’ve been having three issues. the first being that in reverse, my xj misses really bad unless the clutch is fully engaged. i don’t know if this could be a shift position indicator? or maybe a reverse light grounding out?
the next just started yesterday. when im coasting downhill in a lower gear, my tach goes crazy and my rpms drop and it sounds and feels like she wants to stall. when i hit the gas again, there’s a lag and it almost needs to be wide open to go again.
the last is a grinding every once in a while when i go to start it. it feels like a bald spot on my flywheel. the starter is new, and i had the same problem before i swapped it out. the only way to start it is to put it in gear and move the jeep a bit.
i don’t know if these problems are being caused by it or not, but my clutch needs replaced pretty bad. we just replaced the hydraulic unit and i think some fingers on the pressure plate might be bent or damaged because the squeak that i was experiencing came back soon after. the p.o. installed the current clutch before my time, and i know its cheap. i wonder if he may have done something wrong installing it?
thanks in advance

sounds like you definately have some problems somewhere in the clutch/flexplate assembly...
as for the tach going crazy and the misfire, I'd look at the camshaft position sensor. I'm not sure though since there is also the crankshaft position sensor which reads the marks on your flexplate (flywheel on a manual), and you seem to be having problems with that part anyway.

ill have to check the flywheel sensor, i know we had it off when we did the hydraulic unit. if that doesnt do it, i guess well just have to wait and see if the clutch does. its next on the list.
thanks!

You're gonna be skeptical of this, but I've seen where the bell housing bolts from engiine to trans are loose or missing. Could cause ALL of your problems. First thing to check.

I'm thinking maybe its an engine mount. I know it could cause the noise, but maybe the torquing is causing the reverse and the downhill problems as well?

I doubt it.

I know the p.o. fixed a crack in the exhaust manifold. When I step on the clutch, the whole block moves. I know they could use replacing, but could engine mounts be my problem?

Four days later and we're still trying to fix a Jeep with a keyboard and a monitor instead of a creeper and a flashlight?
