I don't have to. This cable is the actual OBD I cable for Jeep:
But if your question is can I make more then sure if I probe my cable I can figure out which one goes where. But again, OBD 1 > 2 adapters are like 12 bucks so why bother?
Anyone have an idea if I can do anything more than read codes only? I want to read live data, not sure if any of the scanners can do this with these inbetween years. I know you can on the Renix era, and OBDII of course.
If you get a hold of a DRB-II, that would probably be your best option... pre-1997 XJ's still relied on an OBD-I system, and thus, they use their own system to read codes. You can do an Off-to-On key sequence (but not start the Jeep... turn from Off-to-On 3-5 times, and stay in 'On' after the last time), and count the number of times the check engine light flashes (it will pause in between the two numbers it will give), and then look up the code(s) it gives. I know a '55' code (flashes 5 times, then pauses for a second, then flashes 5 more times), indicates either an 'Everything OK' (if no codes are present) or 'Done' (once all the codes have been displayed). That's how it worked on my '94 ZJ Grand Cherokee. Again, if you're looking to get data, DRB-II's pop up on eBay. It will be a bit expensive, but well worth it if you do a lot to your XJ.
