The 96 started bucking, shucking, hesitating, over-reving and stalling this morning on the way to work. I babied it home. The TPS failed. It's just turning 242,000 miles old so I expected things to start going south. I replaced the upstream O2, trying to be preemptive, and was intending on working my way through the rest of the sensors over the course of a couple weeks. I replaced the CPS a couple years ago, also out of necessity.

If it doesn't already exist (I didn't search it), I think there should be a reference to all the sensors on the Cherokee / 4.0 listing their purposes, where they're located on the vehicle and their symptoms when they begin to go.

 

If you don't already have one, the FSM is a good place to start. Section 8W shows all the wiring diagrams and it's index lists all the sensors so you can pick and choose which one to address. This section even lists connector pin-outs and wire color codes. Other sections talk about how the systems work and where to find these sensors and how to remove and replace them.
