Rough idle when hot
Hello,
So I have a late year 96 xj, all the parts that are on it are 97....I have been dealing with an issue for quite some time. It's been a lot of diagnosing but still no answer. When it's hot outside and the engine is running bout 220, it runs fine until I turn the engine off. With a 10 to 12 minutes time frame of waiting, when I restart the xj it sputters and rough idle, worse in gear but sometimes I can apply the throttle and it will clear up, sometimes it just dies.
These are thir things I've already done:
Cat converter replaced, IAC, TPS, coolant temp sensor, map Sensor, upstream o2 sensor, purge valve, TSB- heat shield and boot on #3 injector, cleaned the throttle body, new plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. Heat tape on fuel rail and other injectors and fuel filter, and raised the back of hood for ventilation.
I appreciate any feed back, sorry for long post. Really want to get to the bottom of this.
Thanks

Fuel pressure test? 220 seems a bit too hot. Have you checked out the CKPS and the CPS?

220 is a little too hot. Also the problem would DD very much like heat soak. Didn't think the heat soak was an issue with those years though.

You need to verify your coolant temperature. Get some hard data to help guide you to the root cause. Gauges can be wrong.
Get a hold of an infrared point and shoot laser thermometer. Point it at the thermostat housing of a HOT engine. Report back what you see. 220 is not where you would want to be with normal driving, even on a hot day in the U.S.
I'd start there. If it is running this hot, then you need to start identifying what cooling system maintenance needs to be done.
