Hmmm. Mebbe, mebbe notley. My AW4 was toast by anybody's standards. After an hour's drive, it started slipping badly, to the point where I could barely get it to move. It was okay when cool, but warm was a no-go. The fluid was black as what you describe.

A complete fluid replacement with NAPA branded Dex/Merc and it's been good as new for the last 15,000 miles, which includes daily drives of over an hour, much of that at 55-70, and most of the remainder in stop-n-go traffic. It has included many towing trips, too, with a ton or so behind me, some of which has been in 4WD moving slowly.

Actually I just went out and bought some and thinking about changing it out early since I have valvoline MaxLife in right now. No since in going any further with a poor quality oil.

Perhaps someone should exercise their second amendment rights and put this thread out of its misery. As a matter of self defense, of course.....

Thanks for posting, Salad - everyone on here preaches Rotella, but I've never seen any proof about why until now.

RT6 will be in my next oil change
