What's up Guys! Hey I got an 87 CherokeeCheif 4.0 I6 with a 5 speed. Does anyone know if I have to pull the tranny to replace the RMS I heard if its a 2 peice you don't if its a single you do but is that only with automatic trans or does the same apply with the manuel?

All the 4.0s are 2 piece rear main. You don't have to pull the trans. Just the oil pan and the rear main bearing cap. When you put it back together torque the bearing cap bolts to 80 ft/lbs.

Good Luck!!

Thanks man! I seem to be having trouble getting that bearing cap off. Is that typical because the Haynes book i'm reading says to take that bearing plate off first before I can pull the oil pan I took the starter off all the bolts out But dosent budge Am I doin somethin wrong let me Know thanks again

The oil pan wont budge? Is that what you're saying? I had to use a cold chisel in multiple places on mine, it's a ***** to get off. I ended up getting it to pry away from the block a little bit and then I carefully placed a 2' flathead screwdriver into the hole and pryed the oil pan off. I ended up bending it(that how baked it was onto the block) I just hammered the dent out and put a little extra rtv in that spot.

I never took that off.....Not sure why they would tell you to.

Edit: Maybe for more room to slide the new seal in?
