Do I have to pull the tranny/flex plate to get to it?

never mentions the tranny or anything, seems weird that only the oil pan is taken out? but that would be good news to me haha, maybe they assume if you are reading it you know to take it out? i dunno

anyone replaced one before? can you do it with out a auto lift?

The rear main seal is a piece of cake so long as you already have the oil pan off. There are 2 bolts to remove the rear most cap. The lower half of your rear seal will be on the inside of that. The upper half is inside the block. You will need to take a very small punch or screwdriver and GENTLY tap it out. Just tap gently on one side and it will start coming out the other. When you have enough out to grab with pliars Gently pull it out. Just smear some fresh oil on your new seal upper half and feed it in one side until it is all the way in. You will need to put the lower half of the new seal in the cap. I recommend a dap of RTV on each side where the halves meet. Put your rear cap back on and tighten and torque it. DONE. Well, replace your oil pan gasket and you;re done.

I wish it was as easy as it sounds but oil dripping all over you makes it so much harder. I'm gonna tip my jeep on it's side and work on it that way.

 

it's not that bad if you do it late at night, and let it sit and drain overnight.

 

so... pull the pan, than let it sit? or pull the oil plug and let it drain?

 

drain plug, and then when you get the pan off let it sit for a little bit so oil isnt dripping in your eyes.

 

Don't forget wrestling to get the pan from under the jeep with out bending it to crap. And no matter how long you let it drip it will still drip lol. And then the countless time laying under it scraping the old baked on gasket off the bottom. Dirty and irritating job, Hardest part is getting your pan back on with the gasket.

Worst part is when you get a leak after wards lol.

 

One piece of advice when you change the rear main I would also put in a new oil pump and pickup tube.

 

Though a bit of a pain in the butt. Dropping the oil pump and pickup tube will make wrestling you oil pan out, much easier. You should at least clean the pickup tube and all up real good while you have the pan off, anyway, if not replacing it. Plan on disconnecting the steering linkage, track bar, and maybe even lower shock mounts. The more you can drop that front axle down. especially without any lift on it, the easier it is to get the oil pan out.
