Real world mpg
I just did a Raleigh-to-Richmond-and-back trip in my 2000 Cherokee. 2-door, 4WD, 87k miles, AW4, 4.0 six with Flowmaster Super 40 and an AEM intake system, 235/70x15 Michelins. Some city driving on both ends, mostly 70 mph+ freeways, lots of rain, too. A legit 21.4 mpg with a moderately heavy foot, 21.8 when taking the oversize tires into account. Mine came original with 215's, I think.
So far, all I've done on the aero (perhaps Arrow would be more appropriate) end is remove the cross bars from the roof rack. I intend to put some sort of flexible front air dam on it that won't hinder me in the mud during hunting season, maybe just a couple of grill blocks, maybe a set of the Swiss cheese alloy wheels, a subwoofer, perhaps a Scangauge, clear headlight covers, a hood vent, electric fan, who knows what else. My Dad was a former Nash dealer who once coaxed 32.5 mpg out of a '59 Rambler American with overdrive - I once got 30 mpg in an AMC Concord with a 258. I may never hit that figure with the Cherokee's boxy shape, but that same old straght six that was in both of those cars is present in my Jeep in an improved form.
I need to improve the mpg with a 100 mile daily commute at nearly 4$ a gallon, and so far I have. More to come. Other than imagining an egg under tthe gas pedal, what's worked for you? There's a lot of wisdom on this forum, I know.

Yeah... there's a lot of wisdom on this forum, which is why there are tons of threads regarding MPG.
In short, your right foot is going to be your best gas saver. If you're really looking for something super efficient, you're driving the wrong vehicle. With a 100 mile commute, I'd buy some cheap little 4cyl that has no problem getting well into the 30's MPG... it will pay for itself pretty quickly.

I get 14.2 town driving bone stock (99 4.0L)
I think theres 3.78 litres to a US gallon. Petrol is £1.35 so I think that works out at $8.24 a gallon.
You can see why XJs aren't popular in the UK

Stock 99. I get almost exactly what the vehicle was rated for.
16-21 mpg, depending on the temperature and conditions.
Less in the cold winters up here and less mpg for city driving of course.

Driving to Florida I was between 17MPG and 20MPG. Loaded with luggage and 1 other passenger.
According to records I got 15.4MPG average from the last fill up. That is with a very light foot and a lot of coasting. Otherwise I would average 13MPG. I do commute in a very hilly area though.

I get around 12-13 mpg with stock gears, aw4, 4.0, 33"s. If I need to use it long distance I usually pull the front shaft and notice a small increase in mpg's around 15.

With the only mods on my 2001 being a stock size tires, 3" lift, champion plugs and 784 injectors i get around 21-22 highway on Shell/Exxon regular gas with some "spirited" 70+mph. I also forgot to mention that helped me improve gas mileage was before i changed plugs/injectors was removed my front driveshaft since right now i don't need 4x4 in highway.

I picked up a 1993 Mazda MX6 for $500, <$500/year for insurance and registration, and it gets 30-33 MPG. Compared to my
Cherokee which averages 17 MPG, I own and drive the Mazda for free based on fuel savings alone with 50% usage and $3/gallon. Sports car fun, or urban cruiser/off roading. Just flip a coin in the morning :-)
