97 5 speed. Mechanically stock I get 16.5 in town 20hwy. I have a 4" lift and 31's. Mileage verified correct by GPS. I guess I don't see what the OP is bragging about.

 

I wouldn't ***** too much about the mileage you are getting. We are paying $4.50 a gallon here in San Diego and my wife's daily driver, 2001 Ford Excursion w/ 37's only gets 8 mpg. I'm trying to get our 87 Cherokee back road ready so we can park her truck and save some $$$.

 

Actually, your current tires are a little shorter than OE 225/75/15....so your odometer will register a few more miles between fill-ups than actually traveled. Dividing gals. pumped into higher number of miles registered will give u a slightly skewed, to the high side, mpg.

 

Ah ya got to get one of the little 2.5 turbo diesel engines that I have...(european model XJ..Im in Ireland)

Im getting 27mpg on the highway(80mph) and 24mpg city driving and its well able to keep up with its big brother the 4.0 ltr in the dirt....

Just doesnt sound as good...

 

My '83 Chevy dually got 7 mpg on a good day for highway.

My '95 xj gets like 12-15 mpg , 235/75/15 bfg's. I did manage to get 20 mpg going from ct to vt tho. Gas is about $4.35 here

 

this crosses from stat to opinion, but anyone with a stockish jeep thats getting +/- 15 mpg. average should really consider doing a few basic things to help improve the fuel economy. i guess ill start with some of the more basic things id do-
-sea foam into every fluid and opening that will accept it! its relatively cheap and you can add it to gas, oil, or my favorite, pour directly into manifold.
-clean terminals and strong grounds. check all connections between the battery and the plugs.
-new plugs and wires. apparently stay away from the e3 plugs
-new cap and rotor
-new IAC valve, TPS and /or CPS
-new o2 sensors

from here on, it is add ons, or ways to free up existing ponnies.
-a TB spacer and/or bigger TB
-(DIY) intake set up
-disconnect the AC condenser
-under drive pulley kit
-free flowing exhaust

My '96 was good for 18+ in normal, around town driving when it was new, and up to 22mpg on the highway. Since then its accumulated 155K miles and gasoline now adds 10% ethanol. My trans had an issue, and between that and the ethanol, I was getting about 15mpg. I've just resolved the trans issue, so will see if, and how much, the mileage improves.

 

Weeeeee Big Fun....... until it rains, or you want to take two people with you, or a car does not see you and tries to occupy the same space as you. Sorry to rain on the fun, but I used to ride motorcycles before cell phones and PDAs were invented. Too scary now.

Today was bicycle to work day, and I would have loved to ride my road bike to work, but there are not enough bike lanes between work and home to consider it.

Yeah, I don't ride these days since my wife and I were hit head-on by a minivan in 2005. Obviously we survived, but its been a struggle. 16YO girl in a minivan decided to turn left into us. I miss riding but didn't even get to enjoy the helicopter ride.

 

Plugs new cap rotor new. Air filter new i have replace one o2 and will do the other soon just no more money.

 

Sorry to hear about your accident. Reading about it gave me a chill. I am sure living through it was much worse. I am glad you are OK. I have had too many friends with close calls or who have been in accidents to mention. It just sucks.

I even worry when we are in the Mazda or my wife's Mitsubishi saving gas that we are putting ourselves in greater risk than when we are in the Cherokee. It may not have airbags, but I know the mass and height of it improves our chances some.

Mine came stock with 215's, I believe. I certainly wasn't bragging about my mileage, I was just glad to be over 20 and intend to continue improving it. I already own a motorcycle, and I ride it on my commute on good weather days.

An injector upgrade might help MPG and/or performance depending on which mods you have. I swapped to an EV14 (latest generation) Bosch injector from a 3.7 liter Chrysler (Jeep Liberty) which has better atomization and smaller droplet size, and have improved drivability greatly. Too early to say about gas mileage, but it looks promising. These are a direct swap into a 2000, and I have extras. If interested, PM with e-mail address.

Check the door pilar sticker, pretty sure later model XJs were all 225 OE.

 

Which years would be considered late model? My '95 came stock with 215's as well
