rattling after prothane motor mount install

I have an '87 Cherokee Chief with the 4.0L, auto, 4wd. I just replaced my busted motor mounts with the polyurethane mounts from Prothane. First off, it's not a perfect fit on the driver's side, I had to cut away some of the lip of the bushing so it would fit into the engine bracket, but everything is solid. After installing the mounts and taking it for a test drive I noticed a loud rattle under the shifter that wasn't there before, it sounds like the transmission is bouncing around and hitting the transmission support or the unibody. I crawled under the transmission while it was running (you can hear the rattle while it's in park also) and couldn't see the transmission moving any and the transmission mount looks like it's new, it sounds like the rattle (more of a clanking noise) is coming from the transmission support but nothing is moving and all the mount nuts are tight.

Anybody have experience with these mounts? and has anybody had issues like this after installing new motor mounts (aftermarket or oem)?

Thanx

It is probably your transfer case linkage. The thing about poly mounts and bushings is that they transfer more vibration than rubber. You will just have to work on that. There was a kit for that posted, but I forget where it was from.

Who makes a poly trans mount for an XJ?

Already have a new transmission mount ordered, I'm just waiting for it to come in. I'm building the front end tomorrow (control arm bushings, axle seals, brakes, and springs isolators), so I'll get a better look underneath between the transmission and unibody, hopefully the new transmission mount helps though.

Thanks. I put an Atlas in and the stock mount can't really handle the extra weight.

I put the motor mounts in just after the begining of summer, right away I noticed more vibrations. But lots less of a clunck going into gear when shifting the tranny. I have the AW4 auto.Everything is much firmer solid feeling.Oh and I have always used poly bushings.

just installed the urethane transmission mount, the rattle is gone, and it's much more solid. Around the 1,000 rpm the entire truck rattles but only for a 100 rpm or so.
