Default ran hot and leaked coolant...

Hey guys, first off my name is Hadi and I just purchased my 4th XJ which is a 89 2dr. drove it home and about 20 minutes into the drive is started to get hot. when i got home it was almost at 260. once i parked i noticed a big buddle of coolant under the passenger side. and there was coolant all around the coolant tank ( which pervious owner said her replaced). could it be hose connection? any leads?

Thanks in advance .

It's almost definitely leaking from the pressure bottle. A common issue when the Jeeps run a little hot and it's old and worn out. Check the hose clamps, make sure they're tight. Otherwise my bet's on the coolant overflow tank. Either a crack in it or a bad o-ring.

Great thanks, I had a feeling since the guy mentioned the bottle. Ive never had an issue with my previous renix jeeps so I want sure if i had a serious head gasket issue or not.

My old '89 did the same thing, but it was missing the electric fan and the shroud for the mech fan, so it easily overheated. You should check out the coolant and everything when it's cooled down. Maybe test the e-fan. Sounds like the Jeep certainly has a cooling system issue.

Go to Napa and get a 703-1396 cap for that bottle. Start there.

I've seen that advise on other threads.the cap was on there firmly, is it possible that coolant was spewing out like that even with the cap on?

I will definitely give that a shot sometime this week, thanks.

The stock black caps are Chinese crap. Yes, it is a possibility that the Napa cap will fix your problem, tight Chinese crap cap or not.

It could also be a cracked bottle. It may only show up under full pressure at operating temp.

Remove the bottle and look over it carefully for any old coolant stains.

Ok so I got the 703-1396 cap from napa . I will try it out when I get home tonight . The bottle is currently empty with some nasty rust like substance in it. What's the best thing to do here? Just fill up50/50 and test out?

Remove the bottle, clean it out , and inspect for cracks as Firestorm500 suggested. Then, if it's okay, go back together with 50/50 coolant. Get that cap on tight.

Today after I got home from work, I removed the bottle, inspected it and cleaned it. Put it back on with the new green volvo cap, and fileld it up with 50/50. started the car up and the coolant started run through the system, and it got mixed with the dirty coolant.
I let it run for about 20 minutes and it remained at 210, so i guess the problem is solved . thanks you guys!
