Default Quick question on brake proportioning valves - '99 XJ

I have a 99 XJ with ABS... and I'm converting it to non-ABS as I've already swapped the rear from a Dana to a C8.25. I plan on removing the whole ABS setup and converting it to non-ABS.

Is there a difference between the proportioning valvels in the ABS/Non-ABS brakes sytems in the '99?

I've looked at some part numbers on different sites out there and none seem to specify the difference for my year... as if it's the same part for both systems.

Can someone verify this is true? It's the last step I have before I rip-out and replace the whole brake system with all new parts.

Thanks in advance,

JR

it's the same, not related to the abs....as the name implies it is a proportioning valve

Thanks, and yes, I realize it's a simple valve, but as mentioned in the write-up for switching from ABS, to non-ABS; it required a proportioning valve from a "non-ABS" model.

Because I am modifying a highly critical system such as braking, I thought it made good sense to verify.

Best,

JR

Same valve, but different configuration. You will need to remove the plug in the rear of the valve and replace with a fitting. The valve will have three output ports when used in a non ABS configuration. The two front brakes will use the rear port and the middle port. The rear brakes will use the front port.

Only place i recall finding that line by itself was at a yard or ebay. Dorman, and Inline Tube makes it, but only comes in the full kit AFAIK. Other kits combine line 4 and line 12, with the fittings relocated under the vehicle. You could make your own using Nicopp. Bends by hand easily, and flares easily.

I needed the same line, and considered bending my own since parts yards werent much better than mine, but went with a full kit for the convenience as i replaced everything. Inline Tube.

Nicopp is the way to go for line making. Bends great, flares easily. R

The NiCop stuff works well. I like it.

There's a company out of Michigan called "Inline Tube" who makes pre-bent stainless steel brake lines. They REALLY cut down on the amount of labor required to do the job. Whatever stainless they are using bends quite nicely... almost like the NiCop. They are not perfect, but being perfect is kinda moot when you have to bend and finagle them into place anyhow.

Honestly, I would go aftermarket on the proportioning valve and get something adjustable. The brake bias in an XJ is all in the fronts. When you are on ice and can shift to 4wd to significantly shorten your stopping distance, or you are sliding down an icy hill with a trailer pushing you and you *cannot* stop in 2wd but can in 4wd... yeah. Even with the rear drums adjusted properly the brake bias still sucks. Any significant amount of tongue weight on your trailer makes the brakes borderline useless.

Even after the conversion to KJ rear discs with the original proportioning valve.... the rear brake bias is still petty. Anyone who says that you need to re-do the original proportioning valve to accommodate the rear discs to prevent an *** end skid is overeducated and underexperienced.
