Default Question about the tranny mount...

Does the tranny mount hold the transmission solid to the crossmember? Or if I push up on the tranny, will there be a little bit of play? Like maybe 1/2" or more. I've got some serious issues down there, and I'm just trying to figure it all out before I dig in. Last week the transfer case came loose from the tranny, and now I've got a nasty little leak from the gasket surface where they mount up, and even though its all tight I still think something else is loose, so I'm looking into the tranny mount.

Your tranny mount has 2 pieces of steel with hard rubber sandwiched in between. It is normal for you to have "some" play. The 1/2" you have, I would say, is normal.

The tranny mount bolts up tight to the tranny with 2 18mm bolts and then there are 4 studs coming from the bottom of the tranny mount that go to your X-member they bolt together with 4 13mm nuts. You will have lil to no play in a good tranny mount. If you have a 1/2 inch of play replace it the tranny mount has the thick rubber gromet there for when it is under torque or hitting bumps you really shouldn't be able to move it up and down freely (not easliy anyways).

Just replaced my tranny mount friday! so the info is stil fresh

OK good, cuz I don't want your stale info.

I mean, the rubber's still there to take the impact of bumps, but I can feel the bumps. And it moves up and down with little effort. Guess I need to order a tranny mount and then figure out the leak situation.

Where the studs on the transfer case meet up with the holes on the transmission, should that be heavily RTV'd, or is there an actual gasket for that? How much of a PITA would it be to pull the t-case, replace the tranny mount, change the output seal on the tranny, seal up the meeting surface, and bolt it all back in? Just wondering...

Just to let ya know it's easy to remove the t-case. It has 6 bolts that are either 14 or 15 mm. You have to remove the cross member and trany mount and make sure you stick a jackstand or bottle jack under the trany. Then it's just a matter of popping the linkage out which is heald in place by 4 screws on the drivers side trany hump under the carpet. Once that's all done just have an extra hand and a floor jack and it'll come out easily. Also remove the driveshaft of course..

Yeah OKC and Stryker have it right. I bet that the mounting surface got a tiny bit of debris in there causing your new leak.
