Question about stock tail pipe
Ok so my cat needs replaced and I will be adding a magnaflow strait muffler after it. I remember when I did the exhaust on my other XJ the inlet to the tail pipe was NOT 2.25" like it is supposed to be. Someone here must know what I am talking about.. right? I ended up having to put two clamps on the muffler outlet to tail inlet and it still leaked a little because of the OD of the tail pipe.
I would just ditch the tail pipe but my exhaust hanger that goes to the trans mount is broken. So I want the added strength of the tail pipe hangers to hold it up, so it doesn't bang on the cross member like it was before.

Thanks for the response, I will have to take a pic of my XJ. Also my XJ is a 94 and my previous XJ was a 93, so maybe they changed the tail pipe for the 97+?

djb383 You have a 97+ XJ which has a different exhaust as the pre 97. I don't know what took Chrysler so long to realize how dumb the XJ exhaust was before they changed it! My 89 MJ and all my 93 and 94 XJs have had the same exhaust. The header pipe is smaller then goes to 2.25" back to some smaller size. The problem I have run into is that the smaller section is not 2.25 and a 2" or 2 1/8" coupling doesn't work either. If I had a welder then I would be all set to fill in the space..

Fix the dumbness......go 2.5" (cat & muff) from just ahead of the cat all the way back. Finish it up with a 2.5" tailpipe (stock type or not). Band clamps work great.
