Default Push Starting an Automatic

Id like to have the ability to push start my automatic jeep. Can this be done is I add some switch to lock the torque converter? Id place her in neutral, ignition on, then push, once rolling I place her in first gear and lock the torque converter, which I think should spin the motor and allow it to start.

Is this a doable plan or is I over looking something.?

Sorry for dumb question, been driving for over 40 years, but it has been on a stickshift, still learning about automatics.

The last car that was a auto that could be push stated had to be pushed to about 30mph to get the trans to engage .

2 problems with that, one is you need power for the solenoid to work, so if your battery is dead that won't really help, and the transmission pump has to be turning to make pressure to lock the converter.

Yup, need the input shaft and pump spinning to generate hydraulic pressure to engage the clutches and the t/c.

auto trans with a rear oil pump will roll start, my old Jag will allegedly do so, it has a Borg Warner type 8 trans

BW8/12 were also fitted to Jaguar XJ6, not sure about later BW35/65/66

BW8/12 is almost identical to a Ford FMX

I havent tried it out, but from recollection the instruction is it must have some speed up to start

I don't know if cars have changed over the years but we used to do that often with cars from the 60s & 70s. As mentioned you have to get it up 30 mph or so, unlike standard transmission cars.

My friend had an old Corvair that would never start with the starter. He never turned it off unless he was on top of a large hill to roll it down to start it. Was just for the last summer after High School, we both went into different branches of the Military after. Think the Corvair was abandoned at a store.....
