Ya when I look there always are many more ZJ's then XJ's. But trust me spend some time searching and find the one that you want. You will thank yourself in the end.

Well try the best you can to wait it out and find the vehicle that best suits you. You will thank yourself, it took me 3 months to find my jeep.

Very clean looking XJ, my only downside on that one is the fact that it is black. Very hard to keep clean.

Pretty much all i've owned is black. Looks the best when it's clean. Im finding a few that are a couple hours away. Looks like I might be making a road trip...

What would be some good technical questions to ask over the phone or through email before I go on a 2-3 hour trip to pick one of these things up???

Ask how it was maintained, is it leaking, what rear axle does it have, and get as many pictures as you can get.

That would be a pretty good start to figure out if it is worth the trip.

I know they usually say to stay away from a vehicle the first year it goes through a change. Is there any reason to stay away from a 97?

Not to my knowledge, there were only very minor changes between the 97 and 99. If you can find a good 97 go for it.
