Default PCV Question

So I just picked up a nice 87 XJ. I noticed some oil was going through the pcv and into and on my air filter. So I pulled the pcv and it was just an elbow tube no check ball thing attached which I think is how they all came. Or am I wrong and is it suppose to be just an open free flowing plastic elbow?

What engine do you have?

The 4.0 has a small metering orifice in the rear tube elbow, there is no check ball or spring like in a typical PCV. That tends to clog forcing vapors into the airbox. Chrysler calls that a "CCV" system, but it performs the same function as a PCV.

If that rear tube is restricted, or the grommet is closed up inside, you will get the oil in the air filter. New vacuum harnesses are available at Napa. There was also a mod that could be done to the valve cover but requires removal. I'll bet you need a valve cover gasket anyway.
Renix Vacuum Harnesses
The vacuum harness that attaches to the front of the valve cover and includes the grommet/fitting, and is called the front harness, is Napa part number BK 715-1367

The vacuum harness that is closest to the air cleaner, EGR etc, and is called the rear harness, is Napa part number BK-715-1366.

The tube from the rear of the valve cover to the intake manifold is part number 715-1365.

Cruiser’s Valve Cover Mod

Most early and even later Renix 4.0s could be bothered by excessive oil in the air cleaner box. A fix from my old days as Service Manager at a Jeep dealership follows. Information was provided to me from a buddy at JeepTech during those days. I don’t believe it ever came out in a Technical Service Bulletin.

Remove the valve cover and turn it over. Next, remove the fluted tubes that are now facing you by removing three screws on each. Chop 1 inch off each of them. Then, about a half inch up from the area where you just sawed them off, drill a half inch hole in the tubes so the holes will face the rear of the valve cover. Clean and de-burr/sand all rough edges nicely, clean with solvent, and reinstall. Don’t be concerned about the chintzy gaskets that will probably crumble into oblivion when you remove the fluted tubes. They can go back together without gaskets.

Intake and since then I haven't had any problems with the oil coming out the breather tube. Where can I find a breather filter for the valve cover? All the ones I have found the rubber on it only fits about 3/8-5/8 plastic fittings.

As far as a custom job you would have to do a custom filter job. Tap into your custom tube with a fitting and hook the elbow up to a fitting. Why add an extra filter to have to replace?

Factory parts.
