Painting the rear axle without removing it.
On a scale of one to "shoot yourself in the head", how difficult would this be?
Anyone done this before? How much beer and cussing will it take to do a good job?

not too hard but prepare to get dirty! When I did some underbody paint on my Yj I sprayed everything down with GUNK engine degreaser, scrubbed it down with a plastic bristle brush, wire brushed the heavy spots, then wiped it down with some denatured alcohol. I used the rustolem Hammered paint because the textured finish covers the rough spots up pretty well, looked really good after I was done but like I said it is a dirty job because most of the work is cleaning.

I did mine. Didnt prep at all other than wiping it clean and just sprayed some regular krylon satin black on it.
It still looks decent the few times it's clean enough underneath too tell. Basically it's good enough for me, it doesnt look rusty and looks kinda new. I wouldnt bother doing a super clean job, for one after it gets all covered in dirt you arent going to notice imperfections and if you wheel at all you are just going to scrape some of it back off again anyways.
When I swapped in my high pinion front end I wirewheeled it real nice and did a real good job painting it, six monhes later it looks the same as the rear.

I thought this was SUPER easy. A couple cans of brake cleaner and 3 or so 90 cent cans of flat black from Wal Mart and it looked great I thought.
Then I got bored and found some old brake caliper paint laying around in the garage:
Did the same for the front axle swap:

Iant333 I dont know? I wouldn't want to skip prep and cover up rust with paint. seems like it defeats the whole purpose, unless you just wanted it to LOOK clean.
