I have a 99 xj that is popping this code, seems like the transmission doesn’t want to shift. I can manually shift it if I bring the lever down to the 1-2 position and bring it up from there. But if I put it In drive and go it doesn’t seem to work. Any ideas?

 

It could be a faulty TCU. Transmission Control Unit.

The code is for the front input speed sensor, which if it's bad shouldn't stop upshifting. If it's trying to take off in 4th gear with the shifter in (D), I would suspect a bad #1 solenoid, no power to the trans computer, or damaged wiring to the transmission. I don't think I've even see one of the speed sensors go bad, and it's pretty rare that the computer itself is bad. Once you're at highway speed, with the shifter in (D) does it shift okay between 3rd and 4th (which would indicate it's got power and the #2 solenoid is good)?

On Cruisers tip about cleaning the connector, the computer is going to be on the drivers side above the gas pedal on a 99.
