My transmission shifts through the gears fine until it gets to overdrive. it will not automatically shift into overdrive, I have to manually put it into overdrive. It's a 98 Cherokee sport 4 wheel drive any comments or help would be appreciated.

Overdrive is 4th gear. 3rd gear is 1:1 ratio and 4th is .75:1. That's why it's called overdrive.

That's exactly how it's supposed to work. 1-2 maxes out in 2nd gear. 3 maxes in 3rd and D maxes in 4th (OD).
Do you have to use 1-2 to set off or does it drive from still in 3 fine?

Drive is not 3. Drive is a D with a circle around it. That setting gets you all 4 gears. It won't harm the transmission to run in 3, but you'll get better fuel mileage using all 4 gears. I will say that I run quite a bit in 3 myself since I live in hilly country where 45 mph is about the max speed that's comfortable to drive because of curves and farms around every curve, but the engine responds better to power changes in 3. Once I get out on flat highways, it's 4th gear all the time.

P means park. D means drive. R is for when you want to go backwards. N is for when you park and want to keep your foot on the brake. What do 1-2-3-4-5--R mean on a 5 speed and when should I use them?

"Ignorance is curable, stupid is forever"
p.s. He'll be really confused if he buys a 1997-02' Jeep TJ 32RH auto. They don't ever shift into OD.
