If transmission is aw4 removed transmission pan, solenoid #3 is torque Converter #2 &#1 controls 1st trough 4th OD, solenoids should read 11 to 15 ohms

More likely to be the TPS or the NSS (also is the gear-position sensor for the AW4).

You can throw plenty of parts at it, but it would be better to replace the right part the first time.

Got a multimeter???

If you don't know what a multimeter is and how to use it, my diagnostic help will be useless to you.

I'll go ahead and suggest that you also should not be inside your transmission replacing parts that you don't know anything about.

To check solenoids in transmission without removing pan - removed plug off TCU that is located Rt side dash under clove box -with key in off pos.- volt/ohm meter check pos. lead terminal C14 converter clutch solenoid should read 11-15 ohms, terminal C15 shift solenoid #2 should read 11-15 ohms, terminal C16 #1 shift solenoid should read 11-15 ohms make sure you have good ground on - lead. If solenoid cks good problem is else were loose wires or tps

my 1996 jeep cherokee would not shift automatic, manual only - found #2 solenoid bad.
Best to troubleshoot problem than to change unessary parts

okay, I have a question. Once you have done your testing and found a bad solenoid and you drop the pan, how do you know which one is which?

I've heard those can go bad due to driving the vehicle in OD all the time, rather than having it on 3 when you're under 45mph. I still drive in OD all the time though, I'm not into shifting automatic transmissions more than I have to!

dude the guys asking a question a multimeter is a tool used to messure electrical circuits it can messure a number of values and is a must for any jeep owner but i do agree that this job may be out of your capabilities these auto boxs are fairly complicated and the smallest error will cause total failure best leave it to somone who really understands them
