Maintenance is a 99.9% preventative. If it ain't broke don't fix it may apply to a fender or bumper.......it does not apply to 12+ year old cooling systems. Haven't had a overheat so I guess I can say I have prevented it with maintenance. Raise those hoods and have a look.

Yessir. And that includes changing your coolant regularly with a good quality antifreeze. You need to know what's in your tap water too, if you have hard water (full of minerals), use distilled water. Prevents corrosion and deposits and keeps the seals and WP happy. Those two things alone will prevent a lot of cooling system problems later on.
I do mine every other year, drain, flush, refill. Clean the radiator fins, touch up any damaged paint, replace the belt. Hoses are changed every 4 years.
Never have had an overheat and still have the OEM 1996 radiator, heater core and water pump in good working order- at 240K miles. Those things fail from neglect, not age.

Factory recommended interval for changing coolant was every 22,500 miles.

looking for anyone that has had these symptoms. Gets hot going at hwy speeds 60 and above for long periods. Doesn't over heat when motor has strain (not sure if thats the right word) on it, like going up hills or taking off from a stop. Think it might me fan clutch??? I can watch the temp needle go down if its steadily turning 2000 rpms.

When I bought my XJ, it was apparent that the cooling system was very neglected. I had to replace the radiator, all hoses, and all freeze plugs on the engine block. If you have to do your freeze plugs (yes, they ARE a part of the cooling system), GET THE BRASS ONES. Ask me how I know better!
I also had to backflush the heater core so I had heat again, and now it leaks.

Temp was creeping up to 220ish regularly and up even high 250ish if I was jammed in traffic. I posted a bunch of noob threads on here and learned it was probably fan clutch. Did the ZJ fan clutch upgrade including a brand new shroud (like $8 from partsgeek so why not). Fan now blows like a god damn jet engine and I stay at 210 or slightly under no matter what. Problem solved.
