Over heating
Looking for some input, I have a 1994 jeep xj. that's always kind of had an over heating problem. I have no idea what it could be and here's a list of things Ive done to try to solve the issue
temp sensors
brand new radiator 3 core alumi
water pump
thermostat
new hoses to and from radiator
flushed entire system multiple times
even went as far as thinking I had a blown head gasket and replaced that
I bought an inferred head gun and while using that everything seems to be at the correct temperature
but still for some reason my gauge in the cluster will read it over heating at idle and spikes further when I'm driving down the road
I'm not sure but could somehow just the gauge in the cluster be at fault?
thanks in advance

I'm not sure what "kind of an overheating problem" means. So, first, I need to know what temperature you're running? Is the gauge showing in the red? What reading is your gun giving you? Also, what thermostat did you use and what is it's temp rating?
So the temperature the jeep says its running at is 230 at idle then as I'm driving down the road it goes up into the red right around 250
as I was using the gun at thermostat it read 210-218 everywhere else around the block it didn't read above 200 and on the valve cover in the rear where the gauge sensor is located it was 195
the thermostat that I'm using is a 195 o'Reilly's special. I believe that to be stock

Well if your temp gun is reading 210-218 (or right at normal operating temp), then the gauge is definitely lying and hence, I'd definitely question the sending unit. If you were spiking completely I'd suspect a wiring issue.
I'm using a BWD (Advance or Pep boys carries them) in my 95 and it reads perfect. A lot of temp sensors are inaccurate out-of-the-box, so I'd consider trying another one before going to the effort and cost to wire up an extra gauge.

The temp sensor (the one in the back of the head) I used when I converted my gauges read 30 to 40 degrees high. I replaced it with a Mopar sensor, and the problem was solved.
im having a similar problem. first time jeep owner btw... im aware of the popular overheating problem, but let me tell you my scenerio. i live in the mountains in colorado so im aware the elevation may be a problem. but randomly my xy overheated so i replaced the thermostat and upper hose.... did it again. drove it all winter no problem, temp hovered around 210. first hot weekend of the summer it overheated. replaced the water pump, and put in a 160 thermostat. after an hour of idling it sat at about 210. went down the mountain and got some air flowing and it went down to 160 ish. but went back up the mountain and it climbed to 210 again. then once i parked i heard it boiling. also, once i replaced the water pump it only took 1 1/2 gallons to fill when i thought it should be 3. i have had no oil loss, nor white smoke so i dont feel like i have a blown head gasket. is it possible i have a clogged radiator? could that be why im overheating? i have no problem driving in the winter, only the summer. thoughts?

maybe don't be such a tight wad. I was figuring out how to use this site. My question was just about the same as dude who first asked. Maybe an answer to my question could benefit his. So next time our jeep overheats, maybe you can loan us your tampon to stop the boiling overflow.... Cheers ma'am!
