Default Auto trans in park but ignition cyl wont lock

Got a 87 Cherokee 4.0 with automatic trans. When I put shift lever into park, the ignition key/cylinder will not turn to the lock position in order to remove the key. I have to slam the shifter into park to get key/cylinder to turn to the lock position.
Whats the remedy??

there is a park interlock cable running from the shifter to the steering column that probably needs adjusting.

Any time you have to "slam" something to get it to work, don't. Not unless it's an emergency. Your chances of making it much worse are almost 100%.
