Yeah did that and the whole thing snapped apart. Thats the 3rd one broken now. Gonna see if i can find someone who has one of the socket types. I have one but its too small for the xj filter...

I always bust this tool out when I have an oil filter like that. Just about any parts store has it..Just a tip get only the kind of wrench you see in the link.Don't get the black slip adjustable kind (you'll know when you see it) they look like the red handle ones but a lot cheaper feeling. Thanks Duma. I cannot afford that. Ive discoverd i need brake lines now. Gotta take one of my shocks back as it was missing a piece. I was thinking about one of the ones that slip over the top of the filter. Do those work well? Theyre cheap enough that i can swing it.
I have no idea how i am going to get the oil pan out... I went in and looked at it for the first time today. Ive got the jeep up on jackstands on the frame rails as high as they will go and the axel hanging free. Had to take the tires off so that it would hang all the way. The brake calipers are like 2 inches from the floor. Hoping that will be enough but that prevents me from going in from the front.
Im a pretty fat dude. 6'2 300 somethin and i was having a very hard time sliding under there to even get a look at it. May sound kinda sad but scares the hell out of me trusting my life to those jack stands. I removed the stupid running boards so i could have more clearance and that helped.
Oh one issue i see is theres some steel lines covering bolts for the oil pan. What do i do about that?

Oh does anyone know what size allen wrench to remove the caliper bolts? Ive got 6mm and 1/4 and 1/4 almost fits but i dont have anything larger. Hoping to find the exact size and go to this neat used tool place. Maybe i can find those big *** pliers you showed Duma.

if you crush the filter with it, oh well. it's coming off and going in the trash anyway. my filter did the same thing to me. hand tightened it and it was a real **** to remove. Been following this thread for a while...I think you are doing an awesome job sticking with it...don't give up! I have gotten over my head once or twice on what others consider "simple," but I can usually find someone here on this forum that has done that before, had the same problem, and succeeded!
I have used the filter wreches that you are talking about...and I acutualy really like those for the XJ. you can get at lot of leverage...I imagine you can even hook up a breaker bar to it...or just a long pipe...You might be able to find an Autozone or Oreilley's type place that can "lend" you the filter wrench you are talking about. You "buy" the tool...pay cash...then return it for a full refund when you are done with it.
For dropping the pan...I have not done it...I am pretty amateur, but this site is an awesome resource! A thread here (there are several you can search for) might help,

Hi guys. Ok so time for an update. I got all the bolts out from the oil pan today. It wouldnt budge in the slightest. I do not have a soft face mallet. Would taking a piece of 2x4 and hitting it with a normal hammer be a safe alternative?
Also im trying to replace the brake line and the bolt on the top wher ehte hard line ends is trying to round off. Is there some kind of trick to this? My brake lines are splitting apart so i have to replace them.

Can't help you much, figured I'd give this a bump to the top for ya?
I have used the odd piece of 2x4 to prevent damage when pounding on other parts, so I would think it would be a decent solution.

I just changed my oil pan. The old one was very stuck and because I was replacing it it got damaged removing it.
The old gasket needed a die grinder and fine scotch pad to clean off.
Filters I use a big pair of pliers made for filters. Make sure the old seal comes off with the filter, you don't want two of then on there.
If you have to,
Take a pry bar and hammer and hit the filter so it turns loose.
Use a metal scraper and hammer to release the front corner of the oil pan.

I did get the filter off. It was a combo of oil filter wrench and the cap style you put on top and use with a ratched. Gave me enough leverage to break it loose.
Still wondering if a 2x4 and a hammer is good enough to try and whack it off. My dad suggested running a razor blade through, between the 2 mating surfaces.
And the brake lines flare nuts. Do i have to reflare the hard line? Does it just slide right off the hard line?
