Of course, only do this after you've finished cleaning as much gunk out of your motor as you possibly can.

Mornin guys! I had a few too many beers and ended up falling asleep in the garage with a rocker in my lap and a wire brush in my hand. Just woke up and groggy as hell so getting my coffee on and here comes a barrage of pictures so far.

Looking down into the holes where the lifters came out i see nothing but black crud just like what is coming out from up top. The b-12 chem tool doesnt do so much as far as removing the stuff it just turns the fossilized oil back into a fossil fuel. =P Makes it gummy instead of hard as a rock. The rest is all elbow grease.

So i am not sure if compressed air will be much help here. I may have to pull the head and clean those bits by hand too but gonna wing it and see if i can get lucky and get these back in their holes because i do not want to pul the head. Not a job im comfortable with by any means.

Anywho pics incoming in 5-10 mins!

Here we go. This is what im working with. It looks like the marvel mystery oil did work a bit in my last oil change. It was starting to chip away some of this crap.

Getting started here. Cut through bout 1/16th an inch of crud.

First one all done.

Then the push rod. As they all came out they arent clogged. Im putting the b-12 chemtool hose in the top and spraying through and nothing has come out but reinserting it seems to plug it up due to the amount of crap all around it. Going to have to do some thinking on this.

You can see where the push rod was inserted. The only part of it that was clean. =P I found a thin layer of rust underneathe all the oil too which makes me think mybe the jeep sat for a good long while.

This is how im keeping it organized so i dont screw up and mix something up.

And heres the night and day difference. Im also trying to clean the areas underneathe the rockers and the valve springs as well just so theres as little debris left as possible to get things gummed up again. And the rocker arms here are not straight because htey are not tightened yet i just finger tightened them to keep them in place.

Looks like best way based on your explanation of what you have available. I used a bench grinder with a wire wheel.

Ok guys. Done cleaning the rockers and push rods best i can. Here is the end result. You can tell i got a little tired and lazy towards the end plus i was having a hard time cleaning the crap out of my wire brush so i was smearing alot of it around.

Here is about half of the crap that came off the rockers.

And here is the oil. Oil is drained!

However...i cant get the oil filter off which is really starting to **** me off. I hand tightened it on and put it on by hand. I did not use any tools on it when installing...dont understand why it wont budge. Any ideas on how to get this off without breaking stuff?

I use those filter sockets but I've heard of guys hammering a long screwdriver through the whole filter and use like an attached lever to bust them loose.

Don't forget to check the oil flow to the rockers before you install the rocker cover.

Build a dam around the rockers with bits of cardboard, and stuff rags between the firewall and the end of the head.

Start engine and let it idle while you look at each rocker oiling. You can rev the engine a bit to see if the oil flow increases but watch out it will squirt all over the place.

If you don't get oil flow at idle, the lifter(s) are plugged, or the push rod(s) are plugged.

Did you apply some grease or motor oil to the rubber seal on the filter before installng it? If not, that's your problem.

With a lubed seal you can tighten down the filter about 3/4 turn and still get it off many miles down the road.

What are you using now to try to get the filter off? An oil filter strap wrench?

I did get the pushrods in and i made sure they werent plugged. I used oil on the seal for the filter when i put it on.

I broke 2 strap wrenches and bent another one. It was starting to crunch the filter in a bit.

So as far as getting the oil filter off. What size do i need for the oil filter socket/cap/wrench deal? Obviously at this point the strap kind isnt going to work and putting a screwdriver through it sounds messy.
