My oil pressure gauge has been acting odd lately. Today at idle it dropped close to 0 but the jeep was idling fine. When I hit the gas it goes up and if I let it idle and gas it it goes up then it will bounce up and down...what could this be? Sending unit?? Pump?? Hopefully not cam shaft...should I be worried? Let me know guys

 

You can test the pressure with a tester that screws in where the sending unit is. That will at least tell you if your problem is real or just the unit/gauge.

 

What kind of oil and filter are you running? I have had problems with cheap oil and filters.

 

If it is bouncing in a nutty way. Might be your gauge or sending unit. Did you hear any tapping?

 

I haven't heard anything abnormal. It usually hangs around 15 at idle and 20-25 at 40 mph. Today when I idled in park it hit like 5 then I gassed it and it went to 15-20 and bounced to 0 and up to 10 a couple of times.

 

Rent a mechanical gauge from a parts store. Temporarily install it where the oil pressure sending unit resides above the oil filter. Compare to what you are now seeing.

Good data = good decisions

Spec oil pressure for the 4.0 is as follows:

*Not less than 13 psi at hot idle
*Between 37-75 psi over 1600 rpms

Let us know what you find. If you buy a new sending unit, buy it directly from Jeep for the best reliability/accuracy/mating with your factory gauge. Well worth the extra money.

 

Is the sending unit something to suspect? And should i be worried? Shoot it to me straight haha. I don't wanna hear that "your engine is about dead" but if that's the truth then it is...I'd much prefer it be something simple like a sending unit or a problem with the gauge

 

I would suspect the sending unit, which is easy to replace and causes no harm if that is damaged. You just get inaccurate readings, so if you have a problem in the future you may not notice. We only say to check with a mechanical gauge just in case it is a real problem that needs to be addressed.

What brand of oil filter are you using? It isn't orange with black trim , is it?

 

Good bet the oil pressure sender is dead they die pretty often but you can rent the tool to check so may as well do that.

 

Btw I'm using castrol 10 w 30 and a fram filter

 

O just opened that can, lol, thats what cruiser54 was saying, fram is garbage, get a new filter, then cut the fram in half to see why they are crap.

 

Get a Napa Gold or Wix filter on there ASAP.

 

Can someone tell me where to get a napa filter and what number filter I need??

 

It's Napa, as in Napa auto parts. They will know which filter.
