Default Oil Pan - HELP!

Hello all,

New to the board; but, not new to fixing my '00 Cherokee Sport. I've got the 4.0 str8 six. Pan is leaking enough oil to wash the pan and tranny clean. So, a fix is in order. I consulted the ever incorrect Haynes for help and now I'm stuck. There are two 1/2" bolts at the very rear of the pan, on either side of the rear main seal that I cannot get out. Meaning, I am unable to get a tool on them (socket, box wrench, open ended wrench). It seems there is a large crescent shaped rubber thing-a-ma-doo which is obstructing them and I can't figure out how to get it out of the way.

PLEASE HELP!

Mike

Can you cut off the crescent-shaped rubber thing? I believe that you'll be replacing that anyway. Are you going to replace your rear main seal while you're there? You may also need the front crank seal in the timing chain cover.

ar you using thin walled sockets? when I did my RMS, I didn't have a problem. I was using thin wall sockets though. I've seen a few posts with people having the same problem you are. thats the only thing I can think of off hand that may be causing the issue.

I'm planning or replacing the rear main seal while I've got the pan off. At nearly 11 yrs old and 326k km I might just as well. The pan gasket is one piece and no sign of a replacement crescent shaped rubber thingy.

be careful when installing the new pan gasket. it's really easy to mis-aling the rear of the gasket where it sits in the main cap.
