Default Oil Leakage

I have a 2004 Grand Cherokee and I got a small leak at the noted point in this picture. It's right by my oil plug.

1) What is this part called?
2) Can I replace?
3) How much would it cost me to get a mechanic to replace?

Bell housing

Looks like an oil leak.. it could be running down from a leaky valve cover, a leaky oil filter adaptor, or the rear main bearing oil seal.

The bell housing is only an adaptor to fit the transmission to the engine. It doesn't leak, but that's where the oil is most often seen when other areas are leaking (just cause it tends to run downhill) All Jeeps leak oil eventually. Unless it's a serious problem such as pools of oil under your Jeep's favorite parking spot, I wouldn't worry about it. Just check your fluids regularly (weekly at least) Hope this helps

It looks to be ypur rear main seal my man, as for the price if you take it to a mechanic I have no idea. Take it to a place you trust and get a quote. Good luck!

For your sake I hope it's lifted. Pulling the motor can cause problems if they forget something. Just stay the hell away from chain stores.

What color is the fluid? Transmission is red. By the looks of the picture, it looks like motor oil. It's probably coming from the rear main seal, valve cover gasket or oil filter adapter, none which you don't need to pull the engine to do, whether it's lifted or not

just went and checked again and it's definitely oil that is seaping out of there. Like I said earlier, it's not seaping bad at all. It's been like that for almost a year now but just didn't know what fixing it would cost.

Really depends on where you take it. I had my mechanic do my rear main seal, oil pan gasket, drain plug seal, serpentine belt, motor mounts, cooling system flush and replaced the thermostat all for $300. But I'm sure if I took it elsewhere, it could have cost me upwards of a grand. So it really depends who you know. I would suggest going around and getting quotes at a few different places if you don't have the tools to do it yourself

Thanks alot. I definitely don't have the tools. Researching it sounds like the part is dirt cheap but it's a pain in the *** to fix and labor would be pricey. Like I said, It's been like that for awhile now and isn't leaking bad but I have a little money for some repairs on our vehicles so figured I would take care of it while I can.

Yeah the seal itself costs about 10 bucks. Funny how that works eh? Well happy hunting for a good shop!

i wish mine looked that clean underneath, even after washing and that it only dripped that much over a year lol

id start with the easy stuff, tighten the oil filter and the bolt for the filter housing and replace the valve cover gasket which is real easy.

Ok. I would check the valve cover. Why? Because even if you think it looks good. DOUBLE CHECK IT!!! You can tell if its leaking in the back because usually its all greasy and such. It can leak down to where you see the drip. Otherwise have fun fining a shop for the rear main seal.
