I'm new to XJs but I have been running Mobile 1 with K&N filters in my 96 F150 4.9L I6 for the past 16years/240k miles and even at 10k miles per oil change the oil still looks almost new.

Keeping the oil clean is the key. Good filter, and change it more often if you are running in dusty areas or are mudding. Air filter also affects oil quality since the intake for the crankcase is tied into the intake system.

Most valvoline products are 830 PPM zinc (see link below). The exceptions are VR1 and NSL Synthetic with 1400. I"ve always considered Valvoline products to be good quality.
IMHO 830 is more than sufficient for the low valvetrain pressures in the 4.0, the additive probably isn't necessary. Can't say I've ever heard of a zinc level related factory cam failure in that motor.

Here are some zinc/phosphorous numbers for Valvoline, Mobil1 and a few other products:- scroll down to the end

Same here. I use a NAPA Silver and 10w-30 high mileage. Sometimes Sper Tech sometimes Mobil or Valvoline. 178k on my 2001 XJ. Runs great and I don't add oil in the 4000-5000 mile interval.

It's one of those things that matter on a miniscule scale. Though, the flat tappet cams tend to like oil with zinc content.
