Default Oil Filter Points straight Up - *Update*

I understand that there is a roll pin that locates the adapter so the filter points straight back. Does that mean someone removed the pin?

This is a total PIA because the oil filter is jammed up against the ac hose, lol. After 40 years working in shops I'm still amazed at how people mess up the simplest things. That said, if the pin isn't there can I just eliminate the adapter like some do? Have you done this? I don't want to just loosen it and reposition, seems pointless considering only 128k and someone has already been in there and improperly done the job. I need to know it's right.

Also after watching seal replacement videos the FELPRO ES72962 kit didn't seem to have all the right size o-rings.

Or the pin sheared off. I don't think you'll have enough room to eliminate the adapter and go straight on.

You can, just make sure you've got good engine mounts. I would have on my old jeep but the roll pin wouldn't play fair so I just put the adapter back on.

I've read using a PH3614 is the go to, shorter with the same specs. I would use a Wix equivalent, Fram is eh, crappy.

It will be getting motor mounts, exhaust manifold, those are a right of passage I figure but I'd like to be able to change the oil and all fluids first.

My adapter was pointed slightly down which prevented me from using good Wix filters.
I took it off replaced the seals and reinstalled it facing correctly, I don't think I had to mess with the pin, for whatever reason it was just pointed down but it reinstalled fine.

Remove the pin. Reseal everything.

Ok, I am officially confused.

Everything I've read says there are early and late designs of the adapter. Mine was pointing up and the filter could not be removed without removing the ac line. Mine has a 5/8" bolt head not the T60, only one oring on the bolt and two on the housing like the early design. It seems it will go on in the horizonal position as well as straight up. I don't think the motor has been changed so maybe they put the earlier design adapter on it? Are they interchangeable?

As I said, confused. For now I going to try to reseal and position horizontally. Not sure if there is an absolute as far as what year has what adapter because some have said that the FELPRO ES72962 for the later engines doesn't have all the right seals.

Any ideas?

Yep. Your AC hose isn't routed properly.

AC hose comes straight off the compressor and right over the top of (where the filter used to be) filter. Has no other way to be routed. Like I said, this adapter seems to be the early style.

I have seals and turning it 90 deg looks like it won't be a problem.

So after doing some research I have discovered that the vertical adapter is a Renix design but was used as late as 1992, maybe later and has a 20mmx1.5mm thread and the horizontal adapter is SAE 3/4"x16.

So I managed to install the wrong filter, M0-090. Easy enough to fix. Apparently you can buy the other nipple and convert it to use the M0-090. But for now I will just put the metric filter on.

I have also confirmed that the engine has been changed, engine date code starts with a "2", so 1992.

Thanks to all for your input!

RENIX OIL FILTER TO SAE FILTER

JANUARY 3, 2016 CRUISER54 9 COMMENTS EDITTired of having a poor selection of oil filters for your Renix Jeep? Limited availabilty a pain for you? 20mm threads? We don’t need mumblemeter threads on our oil filters.

Here’s a simple mod that allows you to use the very popular SAE threaded oil filters which are more readily available. The old standard 3/4″ SAE thread.

You can purchase a new oil filter nipple from the dealer for under $10 and never be bothered again. Part number 53007563AB. It’s the one on the left.

Or, grab one off a 91 and later XJ at the junkyard. Be forewarned though. You need a 7/8 wrench to remove a Renix nipple, but a 15/16 wrench for the later style.

And just in case you need to replace your oil filter adapter o-rings, here’s a handy guide.

Oil Filter Adapter O-Ring Sizes
87-90 Renix Model O-rings

0.799 x 0.103 AS568 size -117
1.296 x 0.139 AS568 size -219
2.484 x 0.139 AS568 size –230

Dealer Part Numbers for Renix. Sold individually:

33002970, 33002971, 33002972

Renix kit from Crown Automotive-33002970K

91-01 HO Model Orings

0.676 x 0.070 AS568 size -017
0.859 x 0.139 AS568 size -212
2.484 x 0.139 AS568 size -230

Do not assume the nipple is metric based on the center bolt head. I would not put a metric filter on there without confirming the thread.

The metric thread is M20x1.5, which equates to 0.787" major diameter, 0.744" minor diameter and 0.591" thread spacing. So a metric filter will loosely thread onto a 3/4-16 nipple but barely have any thread engagement. It will also have a nasty habit of popping loose and dumping your oil. The smaller SAE filter thread will not go unless you really force it (or you're using a crappy fram filter with poorly cut threads).

To confuse the situation further I tried a metric filter today with the old style adapter with the long standpipe like in the pic above and it does not fit, slips over and does not grab a thread. I reinstalled the M0-090 and it feels like a perfect fit so until I get the new thread adapter (just for piece of mind) for the next oil change I'm GTG.

Why the old style adapter and long standpipe has an SAE thread, who knows. But after finding the engine has been changed, who knows what these monkey's that worked on it have done. Either way it's time to move on to other issues I found like a kinked transmission line, servicing the trans, tc, diffs, etc.

I got a renix xj, with factory AC. filter mounts with its ports at bottom, no problem with AC hoses. Hoses nowhere near the filter. Perhaps you AC hoses are installed wrong?

I run a K and N HP-2007 very good quality filter, yes I have seen them cut open, nice.
As always, place a magnetic drain plug for the oil pan drain. I got magnets on my diff drain and filler plugs too (added drain on the front, still need to get around to adding drain on rear, it get siphoned for draining. )
