I was able to mount the adapter horizontally, though now the charcoal canister is in the way of oil filter removal/installation. I may try to relocate that item, or just put the oil filter adapter back to the original position. Otherwise, this procedure was a lot easier than other experiences I've read about, as my '89 has the 5/8" bolt head instead of the torx of later models.

I used a T60 allen key and a pipe to get enough leverage to get the bolt backed out. Sucker was in there tight, but the allen key + 3ft cheater pipe worked without any major effort. I just climbed under the Jeep with the engine hot, located the bolt, and cracked it loose.
But of course the bolt was all rusted to hell so the torx-teeth in the bolt head stripped out on me while re-tightening it. I got it tight enough to not leak for the next 5-10 years, but only by sacrificing the bolt after realizing I could not back the bolt out, nor did I have a spare oil filter adapter bolt on hand anyways.
If I ever need to do the job again, I am probably going to have to use a sawz-all or a grinder to cut the oil filter adapter off which is going to be a royal PITA.
I used the Mopar o-ring kit from the dealer which was around $4 IIRC
