I'm trying to fix a vibration and in the process I have temporarily removed my front driveshaft and replaced the rear u-joints with Spicer 5-1310X sealed joints.
While checking the run out of the rear driveshaft I noticed that there is 0.015" of radial movement at the rear transfer case slip yoke. I have recently replaced the rear output bearing, bronze bushing and seal in the extension housing of the NP242 trying to eliminate this play.
Measurement location
I believe this play is in the splines of either the transfer case mainshaft or the driveshaft yoke. Are these pieces commonly replaced together, similar to roller chain and sprockets being replaced together?
There could be enough wear in both of those components to give you problems. A lot of guys go to a SYE, or a slip yolk eliminator when these parts wear out. This eliminates most rear end vibrations.
Are you running stock suspension or a lift? Make sure the spring wedges are not installed backwards. In your setup, the rear pinion should be parallel to the output of the t case. If your pinion is pointing at the t case, it will vibrate pretty bad.
I'm running Crown HD leaf springs and Moog HD coil springs, similar set up to the factory Up Country option. I sit about 2" over the stock height.
I'll check my driveline angles and report back.
I seem to be having a hard time finding parts for the NP242, it doesn't seem like there are many options if someone wanted to get an SYE for it. Personally I'd rather stay with the stock setup because I don't do any hard core wheeling or plan on lifting any higher.
