I don't know man it must be really on there because it doesn't move. I took the whole shifter out and hit it with a hammer and it barely moves.. So it does just come straight off then?

There is a specific tool required.........after all these years, you ain't gonna separate it though.


Get a Hurst/Core shifter.

My 98 XJ shift **** spins off, but there is a lock-nut under the shift pattern (you need to "pry" the shift pattern cover up to access that lock nut).


I have literally no idea if the older cherokees are the same, but figured it might help you

I got it off guys I just took the retaining ring out under it all took the whole shifter out and used a vice and a big bar and it popped right off
