Why is it that everyone talks about the filter being at 90*? My adapter is straight. It's a 96 and leaking like a sive

 

If it were straight you wouldn't have an adapter, it would be threaded directly to the block. If the bottom of the filter points to the front of the vehicle, you have the 90° adapter. If the bottom points to the fender, then you have no adapter. Some remove the adapter because the o-rings will eventually leak. Removing it requires using a smaller filter for clearance.

 

I have 96 with 4.0 liter, originally it has aluminum adaptor with its own ORing that has a big bolt to hold it to block, then it angles back at 90 deg for where it has 2nd mating surface that the oil filter screws on. That Oring is normally the culprit on an oil leak. My leaking stopped after conversion, now I can park in drive way.

 

I have about 10,000 miles after conversion with now 3rd oil change.

It have about 3/8" clearance from outside rim of the filter to engine support frame. It does have a small dent in last two oil filters, maybe 3/32" or 1/8" dent. I do violent 4WDing, my guess as to how the engine would move 1/2" forward.

But as expected, no problem. The screw on hollow bolt is massive, and oil filter metal case thin and pliable.

Just turned 175K on it this weekend. A remarable vehicle, it should fallen apart a while ago.

IMHO the conversion is a total winner, cured my oil leak and made OF changes easier.

This time I put on the extra primo Fram PH3614, and Mobil1 syn. After 2500 miles it is still at full mark on the dip. Being it stopped leaking figured put the expensive stuff in it and run it longer.

Snake, Your comment got my curiosity, so looked into it. See it is about paper end caps. I was just looking at filtering specs on toughguard. What filter do you think is the best?

The specs and apps seem to verify the cross reference, that Fram ph3614 crosses to PL10241.

I dont know what is "best". But I use either nappa gold, which I believe is wix? Could be wrong there, or k&n, I like that the k&n is over built but can't justify spending that much for a dd that doesnt get abused. Purolator, wix, and I'm sure a few more are recommended by many on the forums here, but fram is not on that list. Sorry if my sarcasm put you off. Couldn't tell if you were being sarcastic to be honest. Lol.

I was not. Figured you had a reason to say that. Yes Wix and Napa the same and are high rated. The Pureone took top spot in one review, and right now has $3 rebate on Amazon so you can get them for less that $3. I think, ordered 3 and book for free shipping.

 

We get filters by the case from napa, between my father sister and I, we have four xj's, five if you count the non-running parts vehicle.

 

I own a 1992 XJ. I loosened the 5/8" bolt on the adapter, pull the filter from it, removed the male to male in a vise, and pulled the roll pin with vise grips as tight as I could squeeze and beat it lightly against the block with a hammer. Came right out. Put it back together. Took me ten minutes.

Took me five more minutes to cut 1 inch off of the male to male adapter.

 

What weight oil do y'all use? have you heard of going heavier to possibly clog minor leaks..

 

Don't know for sure about heavier oil, but going to synthetic will increase a leak and visa versa. If you're running synth and have a leak go to regular to help slow the leak.

 

If you have leaks, FIX THE LEAKS. Any wieght of oil will not make a leak magically going away.

 

Did this today on my 99. I bought the Torx "L" set from O'Reilly's for $10 and used a long wrench for leverage, put the box end over the Torx tool. Steady pressure and it spun loose. The large outer seal was quite hard but the inner seals were in good shape. I replaced all 3 seals since they all came in one pack from the dealer (paid $4).

Not much oil dripped out but I had a pan under there just in case. If I had to guess, I'd say about about 4 ounces came out.

Total time was about 30 minutes and I am very glad to get this done. That leak was annoying.
