Default Oil Filter Adapter Bolt replacement NLA

(Mods if this is in the wrong place please move as you see fit)

My 2000 XJ had developed an annoying oil leak. Took it to my local mechanic - trusted - staff have a few XJ's of their own - and they are indicating that they have traced the source to be the bolt that secures the oil filter adapter to the block. The fact that someone decided to call it is a "bolt" is a bit misleading. While it does have threads and a head on it, it is also drilled to allow the oil to enter or exit the filter through it along with some o-rings to keep seal things up. I thought it might be as simple as replacing the o-rings but apparently he head on the bolt is shot. He found me a used one on Ebay that appears to be in better shape, but I'm not sure I want to use a used part, but then again what is a 23 year old vehicle but an assembly of a bunch of used parts?

So, does anyone have any experience replacing this piece? I'm not against replacing the adapter with something aftermarket.

As long as the head of the used one from Ebay is good then you should be ok , I had to change all the o'rings on mine and it turned out good .

I have never seen a aftermarket replacement for that part. That being said, I have a spare one around here somewhere with new O rings

Usually, you just need to replace the o-rings.

It's been a while since I replaced the o-rings on mine, but IIRC the head uses a torx pattern. Getting a torx bit on a ratchet to fit in the space can be a PITA, so a common trick is to pop the bit out of the socket and then use a wrench or two on the bit. If the head is buggered up, someone likely tried to remove it with something other than a torx bit.

Not sure how a bolt can cause the leak unless it's the wrong bolt or chunks of metal are missing out of the bolt. The o-rings do all the sealing. Have they replaced the o-rings yet? And have they checked the oil pressure sensor and the port (cylindrical piece) that the oil pressure sensor goes into? That is right above the oil filter and could easily leak on the filter and make it look like the leak is coming from somewhere it is not.

Just some ideas. Oil was leaking into my oil pressure sensor and causing it to read erratically.

This stubby torx set worked out well for me for getting to the oil filter adapter bolt.
