Default Oil in air filter

I know it's an elbow causing it, what exactly do I ask for at the auto store, and where is this elbow at?

A wet/dry compression test? Likely blow-by from worn rings. Maybe see (in my sig), :

Cruiser’s Valve Cover Mod
Most early and even later Renix 4.0s could be bothered by excessive oil in the air cleaner box. A fix from my old days as Service Manager at a Jeep dealership follows. Information was provided to me from a buddy at JeepTech during those days. I don’t believe it ever came out in a Technical Service Bulletin.

Remove the valve cover and turn it over. Next, remove the fluted tubes that are now facing you by removing three screws on each. Chop 1 inch off each of them. Then, about a half inch up from the area where you just sawed them off, drill a half inch hole in the tubes so the holes will face the rear of the valve cover. Clean and de-burr/sand all rough edges nicely, clean with solvent, and reinstall. Don’t be concerned about the chintzy gaskets that will probably crumble into oblivion when you remove the fluted tubes. They can go back together without gaskets.

Where on the valve cover? I know it's not the one on top that goes to the air box, is there one way back in the back by the firewall? And that's a good idea about the mod I might do that later

I noticed this happen a little bit on mine as well. I've read elsewhere that if the rear tube is clogged it could cause this to happen. I hate to think that I have ring blow-by. Is there any other way to tell that without a compression test? using oil I would imagine. Mine seems to be good so far. Anywho, you can buy the replacement elbows at Advance Auto Parts. You can also buy a mini air filter and do the mod that I did here..

I then plugged the hole on the air box w/ a large allen bolt & slathered some RTV around it. Whether you do this mod or not, if you replace the elbow, expect the old one to crumble to pieces as you try to remove it.

I think it's the big front tube to the Air cleaner bringing the oil. The smaller tube from the intake manifold to the CCV "valve" should be clear to suck. If it has much blow-by, that little orifice is just "sucken in the wind". (or not)

Meaning you can check and clean it and the tube, but unlikely that that's the "tipping point", that will keep your air cleaner clean.

If you remove the oil cap, dipstick, or front vent, do you see allot of flow when you gas it? Might even power-brake it a second to see if it relay blows with the oil cap off.

PocketsEmpty, I'd appreciate it if you PM me someday if the inside of that filter clogs up and makes your engine build crankcase pressure. It might pee oil out your rear main, or even lift your dipstick!

I'll keep that in mind, LOL. The filter is very breathable. I plan to keep an eye on it since I did have a slight bit of oil come down my tube onto my air filter previously. So far so good.

I'm just suspicious of those. (with ZERO) experience, except with bow-by. If that doesn't vent the (torrent?), that the 2.4-.6? mm orifice sucks from the rear CCV, crankcase pressure will build, then it goes out somewhere. Pushing out the seals, valve cover, or anywhere.

300,000 miles is close for me, I'm ready!

Keep the CCV system in good shape. It ain't the rings.

Replace the grommets with new ones. They swell closed inside the valve cover where you can't see it.

Here are the NAPA part numbers BK 715-1365, BK 715-1366, BK 715-1367.
If you look up the part numbers on their site they'll have weird names.
Btw, I got the same problem but have been waiting a week for these parts to come in.

Found it in "Cruiser54's mostly renix tips"

What is the airflow direction for the CCV system? And is it different on Renix engines vs. say a '98 4.0?
